From the finest parcels in Ay this true Champagne over delivers! Toasty and yeasty flavors with crisp acidity and lively bubbles. Why spend big bucks for non-CRU wines when this Grand Cru beauty is as good if not better. The French finally let this wine out of the country after keeping it to themselves for years. Vanduzer Wines

Cherry fruit and plenty of chocolaty, mocha barrel flavors. Mainstream, clean and simple. The twin parts—fruit and oak—are like two halves of a sandwich, separate, equal, but unintegrated.

Alcohol: 14.9%

Bottle Size: 750 ml

Samsara Wines

Lots of flashy blackberry and blueberry fruit in this rather forward Syrah. It’s also quite tannic and spicy, the result of 100% whole cluster fermentation. With its fairly high alcohol, it has a mouth-warming fullness. Drink now.

Price: $40

Varietal: Syrah

Year: 2011

Winery: Samsara

Appellation: Santa Rita Hills, California

Alcohol: 14.9%

Bottle Size: 750 ml

Haber Wines

This is nearly perfect, a massive, monumental wine whose sheer power is matched only by its grace and refinement. The flavors of blackberries, cassis, dark chocolate, buttered toast and cedar flood the mouth, tightly controlled by firm tannins and good acidity. Decant for several hours if you open it now, but better to give it 6–10 years in the bottle.

Price: $99

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Year: 2010

Winery: Haber

Appellation: Napa Valley, California

Alcohol: 14.5%

Bottle Size: 750 ml

Bodegas Salentein

Intense, focused and also quite floral on the nose, this blend of Malbec, Cab Sauvignon and the Italian variety Ancellotta is all about the fruit. Flavors of fig, blackberry and cassis ride nicely on a smooth, chewy palate. On the finish, this is layered, deep in feel and toasty in flavor. Drink this impressive, full-bodied blend now through 2018.

Price: $27

Varietal: 70% Malbec, 15% Cabernet Sauv., 10% Ancellota

Year: 2011

Winery: Salentein

Familia Zuccardi

A rich and creamy wine with good structure and plenty of fruit. The nose yields berry essence, vanilla and smoky wood notes, while the palate has depth, layering and composed flavors. There’s coffee and chocolate on the finish, and the texture and length seem just right. It’s oaky for sure, but this vintage of Q can handle it. Drink now through 2012.

Price: $22

Varietal: Malbec

Year: 2008

Winery: Zuccardi

Appellation: Mendoza, Argentina

Alcohol: 14%

Importer: Winesellers Ltd

Great price for a Chardonnay of this quality. The grapes come from cool coastal areas, and the wine brims with crisp, long hangtime ripeness, accented with toasty oak. Feels rich and creamy, with pineapple, tropical fruit and vanilla flavors.
